In this hauntingly beautiful narrative we follow Esther Greenwood a beautiful and enormously talented young lady, who is slowly going under. Sylvia Plath draws as into Esther’s suffering with such intimacy and force that Esther’s insanity begins to feel like a real and even rational experience. The book was a significant milestone in underlining the importance of speaking openly and truthfully about mental illness, especially in the case of women in the 20th century, a time when such subjects were considered taboo.

A must read.

“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree... I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest."

Plath's story is a raw, honest look at identity, mental illness, and the pressure to fit in. What really struck me is that it was first published in 1963, and still hits hard today.

We follow Esther Greenwood, a brilliant 19-year-old with a dream internship in New York. But under the surface, she's lost and trapped. Plath captures this struggle with haunting honesty.

The bell jar symbolizes Esther's depression; a glass cage where everything feels stale. I think the fig tree metaphor reflects her fear of choosing a life path and losing all the others. How relatable!?

Plath also critiques 1950s gender norms and mental health care as Esther rejects the limited roles for women and faces cold, impersonal psychiatric treatment. Only under the care of Dr. Nolan does she start to reclaim herself.

The Bell Jar stood out for me with its unflinching portrayal of mental illness and identity. I found the ending quite messy, which I guess is a directly reflection of reality.

So, if you love raw, beautifully written stories about mental health and self-discovery, this is a must-read.
