Rider Sandman, a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, is hired as an investigator as a formality to rubber-stamp the death sentence of a condemned murderer. Instead, he discovers a conspiracy to conceal the real killer. In the slang of the time, a “gallows thief,” (also a “crap prig”) is a person who prevents the hanging of an innocent person.

About the Author:
Bernard Cornwell is the battlefield bard of historical fiction, bringing swords, shields, and legendary warriors roaring to life on the page! Best known for The Last Kingdom series (yep, the one that inspired the hit Netflix show), Bernard is a master at turning history into high-stakes adventure—complete with fierce battles, gritty heroes, and plenty of shield-wall action.
Whether he’s following the rise of Uhtred of Bebbanburg or diving into the smoke and chaos of the Napoleonic Wars with Sharpe, Bernard writes with the kind of vivid detail that puts you right in the thick of it—mud, blood, and all.
With sharp wit, rich historical research, and a love for underdogs who don’t back down, his stories are perfect for anyone who likes their fiction epic, their characters bold, and their history with a side of mayhem.
If you’re ready to ride into battle (without leaving your reading chair), Bernard Cornwell is your fearless guide through the past
