Hippo Rides a Bike offers a gentle introduction to the experience of learning to ride a bike for young children.

This funny, charming story is the perfect way to introduce young children to the experience of learning how to ride a bike. Also included are suggestions for activities and ideas to talk through together to help children reflect on their own experiences.

When Hippo gets a new bike for his birthday, he is sure he will be able to ride it straight away. But it isn't as easy as he thought it would be, and he gets very frustrated! Aunty Hippo helps him to keep trying and not give up.

The Experiences Matter series of picture books provide a gentle means of discussing experiences, boosting self-esteem and reinforcing good behaviour. Supports the Personal, Social and Emotional Development Area of Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage, and is also suitable for use with children in KS1 and can be used to discuss values. Suitable for children under 5.

About the Author:

Sue Graves is the wonderfully wise and super relatable author behind a whole stack of stories that help children make sense of their big feelings and everyday challenges. Whether it’s dealing with worries, making friends, or learning how to share, Sue’s books—like those in the Our Emotions and Behaviour series—are trusted favourites in classrooms and homes all over the world.

Before becoming a full-time author, Sue worked as a teacher for over 20 years, which means she really understands what kids go through—and how to make those tricky topics easier (and more fun!) to explore. Her stories are packed with gentle humour, colourful characters, and easy-to-understand lessons that help build confidence, kindness, and emotional smarts.

If you’re looking for stories that support little ones as they grow, learn, and understand the world around them, Sue Graves is the author you’ll want to keep close by on the bookshelf.
