Major Thom preserved order at the Ministry of Structured Thinking. The mass-surveillance apparatus he helped create could predict every impulse, correct every deviation, quietly return citizens to their approved paths. Then the Ministry turned their information machine on him.
The Major is taken captive and subjected to enhanced interrogation. His family are forced to endure the very protocols of scrutiny he developed. Under this unyielding pressure, Thom retreats to imagined worlds, fragile landscapes unoccupied by his captors. He fly-fishes in invisible rivers, is tempted by the bordellos of the Wild West, meditates in a monastery in Bhutan and watches a million rose-coloured flamingos lift one foot in unison. But for how long can a wry sense of humour and inventiveness be a refuge when your reality is stripped of all humanity?
