BBBEE has not always had a positive image in the media. This is partly due to a few individuals who became mega-rich overnight, while the majority of black people, who were supposed to benefit, remained poor. This is an inspiring story that shifts that narrative with its evidence of small beginnings, resilience and a social conscience in business.

Brimstone Investment Corporation was founded in 1995 by Mustaq Brey, Fred Robertson and Rashid Seria  who did not want to leave their community behind. Through strategic partnerships with industry giants like Oceana and the support of leaders like Nelson Mandela, Brimstone conceptualised a model of black economic empowerment that created jobs, developed skills and opened doors for the historically disadvantaged to become investors at scale. Named after a resilient butterfly, Brimstone became the country’s longest-listed black-controlled company on the JSE, proving that economic transformation was not just possible but profitable.
